About Buird Pottery

We make Buird pottery in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales, using Staffordshire clay to hand throw pots in our light-filled workshop which overlooks the green hills in the distance.

Buird is an ancient Scots word for table. Itโ€™s pronounced โ€˜boordโ€™.

All our pots are made in small batches from stoneware clay, which is hard wearing and resilient to chipping. Buird pots are dishwasher proof, although hand washing is advised to prolong their beautiful colours for a lifetime. Itโ€™s a lovely thing to hand care for something that is handmade.

Most pieces of Buird pottery are thrown on the potterโ€™s wheel and then dipped in glaze. Each pot will have very slight variations which adds to their character.

It takes about 4 weeks to complete each batch. After being thrown, they are left to dry, bisque fired, glazed and then put through their second firing to vitrify the glaze. Theyโ€™re then checked and carefully packed for the journey to their new home.

We hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoy making them.
